Newsflash! The two competing formats of HD-DVD and Blu Ray are - surprise - confusing consumers! They both seem to be doing pretty well though. From the article:

The companies have sold about a million stand-alone players and neither Sony’s Blu-ray format nor Toshiba’s HD-DVD has so far shown a clear advantage in technology, number of movies or price of equipment, the [New York Times] said.

Why do we even have this competition? We have DVDs. I have DVDs. I will not be buying HD-DVD or Blu Ray. Why? They are stupid, of course. If I am that worried about high definition video I will just setup an entertainment PC and be able to play 1 TB versions of movies. With an image so clear you can see the bugs in the grass, if you wanted. I wouldn’t.

Why don’t you guys spend your R&D dollars on something interesting and useful like holographic storage or quantum computing?

Its that time of the year again. Time for people to quit smoking for 2.5 days. Time for people to eat an apple instead of a candy bar on January 1st. Time for people to buy a year long gym membership only to use the first week. That’s right. New Years. Nothing says annoying New Years tech like the Times Square ball. Look at this thing.

From the article….

This year the 1,415-pound ball has been outfitted with more than 9,500 energy-efficient light-emitting diodes that will illuminate the ball’s more than 600 crystals. The LEDs will use the same amount of electricity as about 10 toasters, say event officials.

Toasters? Really? 10 of them, you say? What happens if that thing comes off the pole and kills those event officials? Rest assured guys, you can die a happy death knowing that your contribution to society has been great. Thanks!

This beautiful work of art comes to us from Taiwan’s National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences. It won’t do 0-60 MPH in 4 seconds…. or even 60 MPH at all. Yup, that’s right. It tops out at 43 MPH. I hate myself for this next one… but, on the bright side of things it runs on solar power. About 3 hours of sun to 3 hours of driving time. I for one find this hard to believe but who cares, I won’t be buying one anyways.

So what does this techage set you back? About $25,000. For that price you could get a couple race horses destined for the glue factory. About the same speed and more efficient.

The folks over at OCModShop have come up with a list of the 11 worst computer techs of all time. Apparently over there a list of 10 is just too good for them. They HAD to have that extra one entry. We think its a pretty good list. Especially the entry about the VESA local bus. We totally hated this technology and how it was all up in our computers… and stuff.

Ugh. If you can't see this you're lucky.

We decided this would be the perfect first post for Obnoxious Mods. We wonder how NEC feels about having their name attached to this? The laptops specs are nothing special but what is special is the hideous Hello Kitty face staring out with its cold dead eyes scaring all other patrons in your Japanese upscale JPop coffee shop where you’d presumebly be taking this to try to pick up high school girls. Take it from us, the Swarovski crystals used to create this work of art (?) won’t work.

We give this a 4.
